Pilgrims Walking the Camino

Full Camino Inglés:

Self-Guided Tour

Ferrol ⇒ Santiago de Compostela

The Camino Inglés (the English Way) was the most popular pilgrim route to Santiago for people from England, Ireland and other Nordic countries in the middle ages. They crossed the sea by ship to anchor in the different harbours on the Galician coast, mainly Ferrol, and continued on foot to the tomb of Saint James.

Breakfasts are not available everywhere, and they are often served late, starting around 8 am. However, if you wish to include brekfasts, we will be happy to do so, where possible.

Spending an extra night in a given town throughout your journey is often a good idea: you give your body a rest, relax and enjoy exploring the town. In Santiago, two nights are included in most of our Tours by default as we believe it’s the least a Pilgrim would need to enjoy the City; however, you have the option to opt out of it.

We will be happy to arrange for an airport shuttle transfer for you from your airport of arrival to the starting point of your journey. The same goes for the departure, unless you end your journey in Santiago and fly out of Santiago Airport. In that case, a taxi can be easily arranged for the time of your choice directly at the Reception Desk at your Hotel.

We do not book flights, nor organize any rail or commercial bus-line travel. However, if you need assistance in deciding how to get to and back from your Camino Tour, we will be happy to assist you with tips and ideas!

We strongly recommend to all our travelers to get a Travel Insurance; however, we do not sell any such policies. For our international clients, it is best to get a policy in their country of residence, as some countries offer insurances only to their own residents.

Highlights

Starting in the lovely, historic seaport of Ferrol with its harbour dating back to the 9th century, the Camino Inglés follows the shore of the wild Atlantic for a while, before it turns inland and leads onward through the picturesque Galician countryside.

As on all other Caminos in the North-Western part of Galicia, Camino Inglés offers a wonderful blend of forested, slightly hilly landscape and occasional, pleasant towns and villages in which to stop for food and rest.

As the number of pilgrims grows steadily from year to year, the pilgrim-friendly infrastructure also continues to improve, making the English a great choice for both new pilgrims as well as for the experienced ones seeking to set out on a new Camino adventure.

Impressions from the Camino

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Ferrol

Your travels bring you, at last, to the beautiful Galician coastal town of Ferrol. Check in at your hotel and spend the rest of the day and evening exploring the town with its historic harbor that dates back to the 9th century. Rest well, and get in the mood for tomorrow’s beginning of your Camino.

Day 2: Ferrol – (Neda) – Cabanas • 27 km. (16.8 mi.)

In the beginning of today’s stage, the Camino Inglés meanders around the bay of Ferrol und and then leads past the small monastery of San Martino de Xubio. You then walk inland towards the estuary of the river Eume close to the town Cabanas. Just before, in Magdalena, there is a nice beach.

Distance: 27 km. (16.8 mi.) | Difficulty: Easy

Day 3: Cabanas – Betanzos • 23 km. (14.3 mi.)

From Cabanas you will first cross the 500 m long stone bridge to Pontedueme. The Camino then leads uphill and offer pilgrims stunning views of Betanzos and Ferrol. Walking along the coast you will reach the city of Miño and walk to the estuary of the river Lambre. Here lies the city of Betanzos, surrounded by green marshland. Take you time to enjoy this medieval town and its cultural gem.

Distance: 23 km. (14.3 mi.) | Difficulty: Easy

Day 4: Betanzos – Hospital de Bruma • 28 km. (17.4 mi.)

Beyond Betanzos, the Camino leads you away from the coast. After a few kilometers you will reach the town Cos, where you can choose between two different routes. (We recommend the old way, on the right.) you will cross the river Mendo over a medieval bridge and, later, you will pass the abandoned monastery of San Paio. You will spend the night in Hospital de Bruma – renowned for its beautiful, medevial pilgrim hospital.

Distance: 28 km. (17.4 mi.) | Difficulty: Moderate

Day 5: Hospital de Bruma – Sigüeiro • 25 km. (15.5 mi.)

Leaving Bruma, you are now in the green Galician countryside as we know it: green meadows, small villages and dense forests. Passing by the chruch of San Xiao, you will reach the pretty town of Casanova. Further on, past the town of Baizioa and just before Sigüeiro, we recommend pilgrims to take the route on the left, avoiding the highway.

Distance: 25 km. (15.5 mi.) | Difficulty: Easy

Day 6: Sigüeiro – Santiago de Compostela • 15 km. (9.3 mi.)

Beyond Sigüeiro, you will be crossing the river Tambre. Compared to the last 100 Ks on other Caminos, the last stage of the Camino Inglés is far more quiet. After only 15 km. (9.3 mi.), you will have reached your destination: Santiago de Compostela. Let the Camino guide you, one last time, into the heart of this magical City. Congratulations, dear Pilgrim: You. Have. Arrived. Celebrate, and enjoy!

Distance: 15 km. (9.3 mi.) | Difficulty: Easy

Day 7: Free Day in Santiago de Compostela

We strongly feel that, after this amazing journey, it is instrumental to spend (at least!) one full, extra day and another night in Santiago, which is why it is added in our program “by default” (though you can opt out of it). This is both the time and the place to unwind, to reflect upon and enjoy your journey’s end and, most importantly, to take it easy on yourself with your post-Camino re-entry into the big, wide World. Aside from that, UNESCO-listed city of Santiago is full of incredible places to explore, and you can collect your very well-earned Compostela (Certificate of Completion) as well as attend the Pilgrims’ Mass at the Cathedral.

Day 8: Departure from Santiago de Compostela

Farewell, Santiago; farewell, Camino – and sage travels on your journey back home or to your next adventure! And here is another option well-worth considering: to continue the Camino on to Finisterre (the “End of the World”) and / or to Muxía – two stunning, mystical places on the majestic Atlantic coast.

¡Buen Camino!
