The Camino del Norte may not be as popular as the Camino Francés, but this doesn’t mean it’s less compelling. Quite the contrary: This coastal Camino leads through Northern Spain’s green inland, over long sandy beaches and passes fascinating cities on its way to Santiago de Compostela. As it is less frequented than other routes, you can enjoy the nature in peace and quiet and find other pilgrims at night to share the day’s impressions over dinner.
Starting in Hondarribia you will climb up the Jaizkibel-heights to be rewarded with scenic views. You will spend a night in San Sebastián – a cultural and historic gem. Try it its famous tapas (called Pinxos) and explore the bustling old town close to the La-Choncha-bay. Ascending the Monte Urgull allows you to see the whole city.
You will then walk to Zarautz, where surfers lie in the water waiting to catch a wave. The Camino then leads through shadowy forests and will bring you to Gernika, famously depicted by Pablo Picasso. You will finish this section of the Camino in Bilbao. This fascinating city is a perfect place to bid the Camino farewell and spend a day to let the impressions sink in, before returning home. Alternatively, continue with our Tour 2 to Santander.
